Asif says: ‘We are all biased, aren’t we?’

I first attended the Grange Conference as a day delegate in 2008. My medico-legal practice at that time focused mainly on criminal and family work. Over recent years, I have developed an expertise in personal injury and medical negligence work. The Grange Conference has been pivotal in my professional development, not least the opportunity to network with and learn from more experienced colleagues. I always found the Grange Conference to be well organised, intellectually stimulating and sociable. Hence, I was delighted to take on the role of Conference Co-director in 2016. I like to think that my role is to consider the needs of delegates who may be new to expert witness work or, indeed, returning to such work after a period away.

I am keen that new delegates attend the conference in order that they may see for themselves its value.   I believe the conference is suitable for a range of colleagues from those who are at the early stages of their medical legal career to those who are much more experienced. The Grange Conference will meet the learning objectives for all.  I may be somewhat biased, however my opinion is that there is no better way for mental health professionals to meet CPD objectives relating to expert witness work.
Speaking of bias, I am particularly looking forward to the Monday afternoon session focusing on ‘Bias in expert psychiatric evidence’ presented by Professor Nigel Eastman and ‘Cognitive bias in the administration of justice’ presented by The Rt. Hon. Sir Declan Morgan.

I look forward to seeing you there!
